You might have seen the young lad in Wimbledon Marcus Willis who’s done an amazing thing in getting to round two of Wimbledon.
The club I coach at used to host some lower level pro tennis tournaments.
A few years back I remember watching a few of the matches just to see what the levels like and where the tennis players I work with need to be physically.
Now the lower levels of professional tennis aren’t much fun.
Lots of travel and very little prize money.
Usually players are funded my the bank of mum and dad or lucky to have a sponsor hoping that one day they make it big.
I remember seeing this player and wondering who it was.
Massively overwieght but obviously had good racket skills to be playing at the pro level.
Turns out it was Willis.
See I found it fascinating that a full time tennis pro could be so out of shape.
He’s not exactly giving himself the best chance of winning is he.
But here’s the thing.
Having been overwieght and out of shape myself it’s horrific.
It affects your mood.
It kills your confidence.
See everyone wants to be at their best.
That includes looking after yourself on and off the court.
Choosing foods that will help boost your energy levels not damage them.
Training in a fun environment with the support you need.
But when you’re young and it’s more fun to go out drinking and partying sometimes you lose what is important to you.
It’s great to see that Willis after wanting to give up this year got himself in better shape and has done an incredible effort to make the second round and now faces one of the greatest players of all time in Federer.
A great sport story.
I see a lot of people who struggle with their weight when with some simple changes it isn’t necessary.
